Zero hours contracts, casual employment, gender pay gap, long hours and unsafe working – just some of the realities that many workers face today.

150 years ago this month the Manchester and Salford Trades Councils convened a conference on the challenges they faced and the need for workers to organise to defend themselves.

That conference was the birth of the TUC. They declared that unions are “An Absolute Necessity” – a statement that still holds true today.
