Take Action on Pay: send a message to your councillors and MP

LG Pay logoLocal government and school support staff are gearing up for strike action over pay on Thursday 10 July.

One thing you can do now to help support the campaign for fair pay is send a message to your local councillors and MP.

There is a link to contact your MP/councillor and some text you might use on the national website.  All UNISON members can help, whoever you work for.  The suggested text is copied below.

Dear Councillor,

Please support your workforce

I am a UNISON member employed in the NHS/Police Service/Probation/Environment Agency/other. As a local resident, I really value the local services I get. That’s why I am asking you to support local government and school workers in this council who are campaigning for an extra £1 an hour on their pay – more than the 1% most of them have been offered by the Local Government Association.

They really need it. They had a pay freeze from 2010 until 2013, followed by a 1% increase in 2013 when inflation was 2%. Now they have been offered another pay cut – 1%, while inflation is 2.5%. Their basic pay is the lowest in the public sector. Over 450,000 earn below the Living Wage and many have had their pay and conditions cut at local level too.

I believe that my fellow UNISON members deserve decent pay for the great job they do in our community. I know that funding is tight, but over half the cost of their claim would be paid for through increases in tax and national insurance and reduced cost of in-work benefits. It can – and should – be met. Please let me know what you are going to do to support them.
