The Wigan Diggers’ Festival is an annual celebration of Wigan-born Gerrard Winstanley and the ’Diggers’. In the seventeenth century, the Diggers occupied land that had been privatised by enclosures and dug them over to plant crops. Winstanley famously said that “the earth was made a common treasury for all!”.
UNISON North West had a stall at the Festival, where people gave their support for fair pay. John McDonnell MP, who opened the event, was amongst those who signed the NHS pay petition. You can access copies of the petition here:
