Stand Up For Social Care Councillors' Network

What is the NW Stand Up for Social Care Councillors’ Network?

The Stand Up for Social Care Councillors’ Network brings together local councillors who recognise that the conditions of employment within the social care sector are intrinsically linked to the quality of care and appreciate that our current model of outsourced and fragmented social care has served to undermine pay, conditions and care standards within the sector.

The purpose of the network is to connect sympathetic councillors, workers, trade unions and supportive organisations to share experience and best practice, educate and organise collectively to improve social care standards across local authorities by strengthening social value commissioning and by developing alternative models of social care that will be delivered in-house and that will put workers and service-users before private profit.

How does the Stand Up for Social Care Councillors’ Network work

The Stand Up for Social Care Councillors’ Network will provide practical guidance, resources and support to councillors who wish to improve employment and care standards within the social care sector in their authority. This will be done through online resources, meetings and events that bring together councillors, workers, activists, campaigners and academics. We are currently working with the Association of Public Service Excellence (APSE) as independent advisors to provide practical support and guidance to the network.

Who supports the Stand Up for Social Care Councillors' Network?

"I believe that the needs of people always come before profit and support the aims of UNISON North West’s Social Care Campaign to improve pay and conditions and explore public provision of social care."

Cllr Gina Reynolds, Lead Member for Adult Services, Health & Wellbeing, Salford City Council

"I am delighted to endorse Unison’s Stand Up for Social Care Network.  This campaign will highlight the disgraceful underfunding of the social care sector and how many thousands of workers in the sector are devalued by working for poverty wages and conditions inappropriate for a 21st century workforce."

Cllr Matt Brown, Leader of Preston City Council

"I wholeheartedly support Unison’s campaign to rebuild a social care system that puts care workers and service users right at the heart of service delivery."

Cllr Janet Mobbs, Stockport Council Adult Social Care & Health Scrutiny Committee
