Retirement Under The Microscope at Bolton Metro Branch

As a result of some members in the Environmental Services Department depot considering early retirement, Lighthouse Financial Services came to talk about pensions and the possible way forward for staff.

15 members attended the short session which will possibly lead to free one-to-one sessions with Lighthouse and then further financial advice if needed and agreed. They were taken through the Local Government pension scheme, the other schemes and changes in those schemes in the last few years, what to expect from the statutory pension and the issues and opportunities around choosing to take a lump sum from your pension or settling for a weekly payment.

It was a lot to take in and it seemed that a lot of the attendees will be seeking further one-to-one sessions, which are provided as part of UNISON membership.

Bolton Unison’s Lifelong Learning coordinator Sue Vickers who arranged the session was happy so many attended;

“This is all part of your UNISON membership and it’s great that we could help to advise so many people; we plan to roll out some more sessions – it just shows the benefits of being in UNISON!”
