Public Sector Solidarity as Firefighters Take Action on Pensions

Firefighters are taking action today over attacks on their pension rights that include delaying their retirement age to 60.  UNISON North West Regional Convenor Angela Rayner addressed the FBU rally in Manchester today, bringing our union’s support to their struggle.  Solidarity between public sector unions was a key theme in speeches at the rally.

Kevin Brown from the FBU (pictured below) ridiculed the idea of firefighters having to work to 60.  On the first day of the World Cup he spoke about how England Manager Roy Hodgson could not pick Gary Lineker or Alan Shearer because they are too old.  Similarly, he said: “firefighting is not a veterans event”.
