Hyndburn UNISON Branch Shows Dementia Awareness

Taking advantage of UNISON Learning and Organising Services’ offer to deliver free Dementia Awareness workshops with the Open University, 12 members and potential members at Hyndburn Local Government branch recently attended one of a series of regional workshops. They heard about the physical basis of dementia, discussed different types of dementia, watched some videos showing the social and psychological effects of coping and caring for someone with dementia and participated in activities to show the difficulties of undertaking everyday tasks with dementia.

ULR lead Louise Evans, who is doing lots of learning work through events like these and a digital inclusion project, funded though UNISON from the Union Learning Fund, said:

“We’re really pleased to have the opportunity to raise awareness of dementia and it was really valuable for people to talk about their own experiences of being touched by dementia in a confidential environment and with colleagues who have had similar experiences. We intend to do a lot more learning work with UNISON, continuing our digital inclusion work with drops ins, plus a Facing Change Together workshop in February and a Your Skills Your Future workshop in March.”

If your branch want to run dementia awareness workshops, please contact Steve Swift on [email protected] or 07939 583702.
