Demonstrators took to the streets of Manchester on Saturday to call for an end to the austerity policies that are causing such damage to people’s lives in the North West. Around 1500 people braved the rain and grey skies to march for a brighter future, with UNISON banners from across the region in evidence. Later, a rally at Castlefield Arena heard Dave Prentis say that the Government has to end austerity:
“We want a better, fairer society, with dignity back in our public services. We’ve got to take action and we’ve got to be strong. If we do that, we will win – because we are the voice of the people.”
The rally heard speeches from Annette Wright (Manchester Trades Council), Avis Gilmore (NUT), Rena Wood (UNISON), Penny Hicks (People’s Assembly), and Steve Farley (PCS/NWTUC).
