Some courses are advertised with dates and some without dates. Where there are no dates set this means we are collecting names on a waiting list so that we can gauge demand before we advertise the course proper.
To EXPRESS an INTEREST in any of our courses go to the course catalogue and click on the title – you’ll then be asked to fill out a short form and when you click submit an email will be sent North West Learning and Organising and one of us will get back to you to discuss the course content and format.
For most courses your branch will need to authorise your application - we will send the application to you asking you to consult your Branch Mentor or Branch Education Coordinator to help you complete and return the paperwork.
Once a completed application is received in the Regional Learning and Organising unit an acknowledgement is sent to the applicant. Around two weeks prior to the course start date the applicant is sent joining instructions including:
• Pre-course work
• A map and directions to the venue
• Session timings
• Guidance about what to do if you cannot attend
At the course you will be given a course attendance certificate for your portfolio and for your branch to take a copy when you claim travelling expenses.
Funding course places:
Branches should allocate sufficient funds to ensure all applicants can attend appropriate UNISON learning events. It is the branch and not the individual applicant who is responsible for the payment of course registration fees and travelling expenses. Unless otherwise stated the course registration fees include all refreshments – usually mid morning and mid afternoon beverages and lunch. Branches are invoiced after the course for registration fees. Travelling expenses are paid by the Branch.
Non–attendance at courses:
From time to time a small minority of applicants do not turn up for the course and do not inform the Regional Learning and Organising unit beforehand. Because of the disruption caused by this practice, the region will charge branches for all applicants with a confirmed place on the course, unless we receive written notification that the applicant has withdrawn, five working days prior to the course start date. In the case of genuine emergencies where it is not possible to give five days notice the Regional Learning and Organising unit should be contacted without delay, leaving a message on 0161 661 6751 or email firstname.lastname@example.org followed by a confirmation letter from the branch within seven days of the course start date.
