The region welcomed a delegation from the Australian Services Union (ASU) to Arena Point on Friday 4th October.
The ASU organises mainly in local government, also has members in the energy, utility and airline industries.
The delegation is examining the impact of privatisation and cuts within the public sector.
Mo Baines from APSE gave an overview of the government’s drive to increase private sector involvement in delivering local services.
Glen Williams from Sefton local government branch reported on a recent successful campaign around in-sourcing previously privatised services.
Pat Mc Donagh and Pete Banks from Manchester local government branch explained how the branch worked with the city to devise a positive redeployment policy to handle the huge financial cuts imposed by central government on the council.
There was an excellent discussion with the delegation on the problems facing the unions and public services in both Australia and the UK.
